Man there we’re a lot of initials and acronyms on this week’s playlist. Highlights include another stellar track from Florence and The Machine, the newest single from M.I.A, and a show stealer from unsigned and relatively unknown Christina Perri (she’s the sister of Shinedown guitarist Nick Perri) . Apparently, this song received some kind of unofficial premiere on last nights episode. I can’t wait to hear more from this artist.

Season 2 of HBO’s Hung premieres on Sunday night, so I thought I would take this opportunity to review the newly released Hung Soundtrack. I have not seen this show, but I get from the music here that it is both gritty – The Black Keys, Lorretta Lynn by-way-of Jack Black and Devendra Banhart – and heartfelt – Grant Lee Philips and Joseph Arthur. The other highlights on this offering include contributions from Morcheeba and The Psychedelic Furs. And of course this soundtrack would not be complete without Mickey Avalon “My Dick” (I dare you to get through that whole song without cringing.) Overall, it’s a nearly cohesive mix, so check it out.
Hung: Original Television Soundtrack is available now on Primary Wave Records.
Friday Night Lights is known for having great music. After 4 seasons, music supervisor Liza Richardson knows exactly how to heighten the emotions. Whether it be a throbbing hip-hop beat on the football field, a raw ballad during a poignant moment of character development, or a country classic to remind us that we are in fact in Texas, its all done with subtlety and style.
Vol.2 of the series collection offers mostly the ballads and the indie rock side of FNL, but it is a good representation of the show’s overall mood. While I was surprised to see songs like Great Northern “Driveway” (heard during Matt’s father’s funeral; a key moment this season) were not included, there is a lot to love here. Key tracks include White Rabbitt “Percussion Gun”, Band of Skulls “I Know What I Am” and Augustana “Fire”. It’s a is low-key mix, but it makes for a great listen from start to finish.
If you can handle the spoiler clips, check out the video for White Rabbitt “Percussion Gun”:
